CO's Message Sept. 07

Greetings
Well another busy training year begins for the South Alberta Light Horse. We are coming off an interesting 6 months where we had very high parade numbers in Jan – Feb, a Battlefield Tour that included the Rededication of Vimy Ridge, a Vimy Ridge Ceremony at the Legislature, a number of local squadron exercises and preparing 14 of our soldiers and officers to go to TF1-08. Some of the deploying SALH soldiers will be employed in a tank troop with the Lord Strathcona Horse (RC). Quite a number of personnel have completed courses that where run in various locations across Canada in last 3 months. In fact a number of unit members finished first on their courses.
Well done!

The Commander of Land Staff intent is for the Reserves to train in a combined arms setting. Therefore the 41 Brigade has designed a series of training weekends aimed at the leadership of the Brigade units. We will be heavily involved in this training by supplying instructors and our expertise in Armour matters. The period of Sep – Dec 07 will be directed toward Individual Battle Task Standards followed by Jan – Apr Reconnaissance Battle Task Standards. This training peaks at the Brigade Training Event that will be held in conjunction with 38 Brigade in Dundurn from 26 Apr – 04 May 08. At this exercise we will field two troops, a Squadron Headquarters and part of an A Echelon. So mark that on your calendar for this challenging exercise! In May we will be looking at conducting a Regimental Gun Camp. Other events that will take place are the hosting of the South Alberta Regiment Veterans Association in September and the conducting the Western Armour Regiments JCATS Exercise and Professional Development Weekend in December. Also we will need instructors for various instructors for BMQ and SQ courses that will be held in Task Force North and South Locations.

One award that I am proud to announce is the Commanders Commendation to Sergeant Renee Gervais for her actions during TF1-06. Sergeant Gervais saved the life of a fellow Canadian soldier whose vehicle was struck by an IED while in a convoy outside the village of Pada in Kandahar province. Her application of First Aid to the soldier was critical in saving his life. We are all proud of you Sergeant Gervais as you show the true spirit of citizen soldier and a Light horseman!

I look forward to seeing you throughout the year.
