History of Honourary Colonels
The South Alberta Light Horse maintains the history and traditions of Honourary Colonels that date back the creation of the regular British Army in the 17th century.
During that time the King appointed Colonels from the ruling elite to raise regiments to serve the crown. These regiments were completely financed and equipped by the appointed Colonels who chose a Honourary Lieutenant-Colonel to train and administer the regiment.
Over time this practice evolved and the position of Honourary Colonel now has a much different focus.
The Honourary Colonels consist of an Honourary Colonel and an Honourary Lieutenant-Colonel.
The Honourary Colonels are strong active advocates for the regiment, constantly using their personal influence to gain regimental support of the local community and often act as regimental ambassadors at business, political and social events.
Honourary Colonels act as personal advisors to the Commanding Officer and, through strong personal example and attendance at Regimental events, promote high standards of achievement and general "esprit de corps".
Honourarys are chosen from prominent citizens of the community and many Honourarys have no prior military service.
