Within the Army, mess life is an important aspect of the culture and well being of the Regiment.

The mess is a social organization where like-ranked members can go to enjoy their time off and engage in discussion and banter without having to worry that their command structure is watching and listening. Generally speaking the rank structure is not observed in the mess and it gives the opportunity to voice your thoughts to members of your peers over a pint. Various social activities (movie nights, parties, celebrations and mess dinners) are held in each of the various mess facilities.

The SALH has mess facilities in both Edmonton and Medicine Hat. In Edmonton there is a Jr. Ranks Mess, Sgt's and WO Mess and an Officers Mess. These facilities are shared with other units at Jefferson Armoury.

In Medicine Hat there is a Jr. Ranks Mess and the Sgt's and WO mess is operated jointly with the Officers Mess. The SALH is the only unit using those two messes.

Each member of the Regiment MUST belong to a mess. This is a requirement of the Army and there is a tariff that comes off the soldiers’ pay. This goes directly to the mess to support daily operations, including such costs as bartenders, as well as subsidizing social events.

The messes in Edmonton also hire out the facility to the general public for special events.
